3 Simple and Cost Effective Ways to Unclog Your Pores and Fight Acne

There are some very simple things you can do to start the fight against acne, oily skin, dead skin build-up, and enlarged pores, but first, let’s talk briefly about some myths you may have heard about “pore treatments”.

Pores do not open and close

Pores are simply openings in your skin that act as a funnel for the body to push out excess oil and dead skin cells – they don’t have muscles, so aren’t able to open and close.

When people tell you how to “open your pores”, what they’re really telling you is how to unclog your pores to enable the body to push that excess oil and those dead skin cells out of the body. When your pores are clogged, you get painful pimples and blackheads.

It’s hard to make your pores physically smaller

Your pores are the size they are due mainly to genetics, and making them smaller is pretty difficult. Luckily, however, you can make them look smaller. This is accomplished through a regular skin care regimen that includes daily cleansing and unclogging.

Preparation – start with a clean base

Before you attempt to unclog your pores, always start with a clean face. Cleaning any surface level dirt, makeup, and dead skin will make unclogging your pores using one of the following methods more effective.

To clean your face properly:

  1. Find a skin cleanser best suited to your skin type
  2. Wet your face with warm water
  3. Apply the skin cleanser in small circular motions and massage your skin for about a minute without scrubbing
  4. Rinse your face with warm water thoroughly
  5. Pat your face dry (never rub it)

Now you’re ready to start unclogging your pores with one of the methods below.

#1 – Bowl of boiling water

If you can’t afford to buy a facial steamer or go to expensive beauty spas for treatment, simply using the steam from boiling water is an effective and cheap alternative.
To unclog your pores using a bowl of hot water:

  1. Clean your face properly (see preparation steps above)
  2. Boil some water in an electric jug or pot on the stove
  3. Pour 2-3 cups of boiling water into a bowl
  4. Hold a towel over your head and hold your face over the bowl for 10 minutes
  5. Optional: Use the Blackhead Remover Vacuum device to dislodge and remove any stubborn dirt/build up in your pores
  6. Gently wash your face with warm water
  7. Complete the steps in post-steam treatment below

#2 – Steaming hot towel

If you don’t want to worry about boiling water and using towels, you can unclog your pores by using a washcloth and water.

  1. Clean your face properly (see preparation steps above)
  2. Soak a washcloth in hot water
  3. Wring it out so it’s slightly damp
  4. Put it in the microwave for 30 seconds
  5. Check the temperature of the washcloth to be sure it won’t burn your face
  6. Hold the washcloth to your face for 5-10 minutes
  7. Optional: Use the Blackhead Remover Vacuum device to dislodge and remove any stubborn dirt/build up in your pores
  8. Gently wash your face with warm water
  9. Complete the steps in post-steam treatment below

#3 – Shower steam

  1. Complete the preparation steps above
  2. Run the shower as hot as you can for 5-10 minutes
  3. Stand in the steam it produces for 10 minutes while the water is still running hot
  4. Optional: Use the Blackhead Remover Vacuum device to dislodge and remove any stubborn dirt/build up in your pores
  5. Gently wash your face with warm water
  6. Complete the steps in post-steam treatment below

Post-steam treatment

After you have completed one of the steam treatments above, it’s important to finish the process by applying a skin toner and moisturizer.

      - Apply a natural skin toner to your face

A toner will complete the cleansing of your skin by removing the dust, pollution and other impurities that can hang around after washing your face with a cleanser, especially the cleansers that contain oil that can leave a film on your skin.

       - Moisturize your face

Moisturizer will hydrate your skin as steam treatment can dry it out.

By following any one of these processes regularly, you will unclog your pores and help prevent acne and blackheads from forming.
